25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

The competition is intense. The words are hilarious. Let the spelling begin! The show centers around a fictional spelling bee in Putnam County, New York. Six kids face off in the battle of their lives. They compete against each other as well as members of the audience. Three adults help adjudicate the proceedings: a nostalgic former spelling bee winner, a mildly insane Vice Principal and The Official Comfort Counselor completing his community service to the state of New York.

Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’
‘Spamalot’ tells the legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find the Holy Grail. However, diverting a bit from the true story, this hilarious musical features such oddities as a line of beautiful dancing girls, a flatulent Frenchmen and killer rabbits. Outside there is plague with a 50% chance of pestilence and famine. Throughout the show Arthur, traveling with his servant Patsy, recruits several knights to accompany him on his quest, including Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad. In the roaring twenties in Chicago, Roxie Hart, an ambitious chorus girl, murders her lover. She then convinces her gullible husband, Amos, that her lover was in fact a burglar. Amos agrees to take the rap until the police convince him that the burglar was in fact Roxie’s lover. Thus, Roxie goes to jail and joins another famous stage performer and murderess, Velma Kelly. Both Roxie and Velma are headline hunters seeking to capitalize on pre-trial publicity for the sake of acquittal and stage careers. In the end their tricky lawyer, Billy Flynn, manages to get both Roxie and Velma free. However, another woman shoots up the courthouse and steels the limelight – effectively ending the careers of both Roxie and Velma.

Maria is a sweet young postulant whose love of freedom makes it obvious to her superiors that she is not suited for religious life. Thus, she is sent off to be the governess to Captain von Trapp’s seven troublesome children. Unlike previous governess’, Maria becomes friends with the children due to their mutual love of music. Soon, even the strict Captain begins to admire Maria. Eventually, the Captain and Maria fall in love and are married. Unfortunately, when the Nazis invade their homeland, Austria, the whole family is forced to flee over the Alps to escape.

But, there’s just one thing stopping Warner from popping the question: Elle is too blonde — to the dismay of Warner’s East-Coast blue blood family. So, when Warner packs up for Harvard Law and reunites with an old sweetheart from prep school, Elle rallies all her resources and gets into Harvard, determined to win him back. Elle must wage the battle of her life, for her guy, for herself, and for all the blondes who suffer endless indignities everyday.

 

Benefit Revue – one night only!

July 28 (7:00)

Bringing back the popular Benefit Revue, an evening of song and dance “from shows we’d like to do, from shows we’ve done in the past and from shows we promise we’ll never do,” on July 28. All proceeds go toward the BSP scholarship fund. A Champagne reception follows the performance.  Come ‘meet the company’ while supporting education in the Arts.

The decade of 50s was the decade of Rock and Roll music but at the

beginning of the 1960s, pop and rock and roll trends of the 1950s continued; nevertheless, the rock and roll of the decade before started to merge into a more international, eclectic variant known as rock.

Enjoy an evening of staged hits from artists like Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Ritchie Valens, The Beach Boys, Elton John, Johnny Cash and more as the Bigfork Summer Playhouse brings you the Hits of the 50’s and 60’s, live onstage!
