Say hello to Kaler Navazo, costume designer from Phoenix, Arizona! It’s Kaler’s first season with the Bigfork Summer Playhouse and she’s thrilled to be in Bigfork for the Playhouse’s 55th season! Learn a little about Kaler below…
What role(s) do you play at the BSP this season?
Costume Designer — The Full Monty
Stitcher — all other shows
What is your personal history with theatre?
When I originally started getting into theatre, I was in middle school and I helped paint all the sets. I also worked in the background for the shows. When I got into high school, all our costumes were professionally made so I worked on making the sets. I was never very involved with costume design at that point, although I was making making my own costumes for my own purposes. It was at that time that I was building up my skill in sewing.
It was not until I went to Arizona State University and was encouraged to pursue my love for costumes that I really got involved in theatre. This last spring semester I was the costume assistant for a small production at ASU. That was when I figured out that this is really what I wanted to do with my life.
This is my first year. I came here because I heard about an opening for a costume designer from my professor who used to work at Bigfork. I came here because I knew it was going to be a good learning opportunity for me.
What is your favorite thing to do in your “off” time while staying in Bigfork?
On my off time, I usually try to find new and good places to eat. I love going to new places and tasting new things. So many things here are local to the area so I’m enjoying these things before going back to Phoenix.
What are your plans after the BFSP season ends?
I am returning to Arizona State University for my sophomore year and will be continuing my education. I plan to apply for the theatre concentration in design and production.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Even though this is a tough and stressful job, I really hope to return next year. I have made some great friends that I hope to see again!
